I believe at some point in our blogging careers, we become less than happy with the appearance of our blog. Trust me, I’ve been blogging for over 6 years and I do this almost quarterly with each of my blogs!

When I complete a blog design, I’m super excited. It may not be everything I envisioned, however, it’s pretty darn close. But as the month’s progress, there is always something that I want to change or make more appealing to my eyes.

This is when I get myself into trouble

I’ve trashed so many designs by going into the Editor and messing up the code. Thankfully, I learned from those dreadful blunders. Who would ever have thought to create a backup before going into the code? Even the worse of my design goofs still did not deter me from wanting to enhance or beautify my blogs. I must be a gluten for punishment, right?

3 Awesome Ways to Overcome an Unalluring Blog

Not exactly. I’m a firm believer in creating the “perfect to me” vision and won’t stop until I achieve it. Of course, it doesn’t help when I visit some of my favorite Web Developer sites, like April of Studio Mommy, and see these beautiful themes they created! I must have them, and thus, I get them.

Oh, and by the way, this theme I’m rocking as of today is indeed a Studio Mommy creation that I customized to my liking.

So, what happens when you fall out of lust with your #blog? #webdesignClick To Tweet

I’ll give you 3 tips that usually help me, at least, on a temporary basis.

3 Awesome Ways to Overcome an Unalluring Blog

Change the Colors

I’m a very visual person and get tired of the same old colors. My color preferences also change with the seasons. There are times I prefer a quite mint or peach color and others, a more vibrant look like my Gals Pushin’ 50 blog.

Sometimes, the slightest change in color can make a huge difference. Or maybe you need to change the color palate and add 2 to 3 more colors.

But don’t worry, if your theme doesn’t allow you to customize the colors or you don’t have the knowledge how you can always contact a WordPress Web Designer to assist you with your needs.

Change the Fonts

Again, being a visual person who has a creative eye, I find new fonts and fall in love. There are so many fabulous type styles you can use on your blog. Don’t kid yourself into thinking that you can only use one (1) font. Shake things up a bit and add 1 or 2 more.

Get Creative!

I usually have 2 or 3 fonts in my web designs. I like having:

  1. Body/Content font
  2. Header font (H1 – H6)
  3. Title font

But that’s just me. I like challenging my creative eye and skills.

Again, if you don’t have the knowledge, and don’t trust those “font plugins” that cause more chaos than not, you can always reach out to a Web Designer or another fellow blogger. You’d be surprised what your blogging friends know how to do.

Complete Overhaul

YES! We finally made it to my favorite way!

If you're not digging your current #blog #theme, it's time to ditch it and create a kickass one!Click To Tweet

There are so many places to look when looking for a new WordPress theme. I have a select few that I turn to and recommend to my Clients and Friends.

Most of these Developers have Tutorials that accompany their designs. However, you make feel a bit timid in trying your hand at designing your own. Or you may not even have the time or patience to complete the task.

This is where hiring a Web Designer, like myself, to complete the install, setup, and custom design comes in handy. However, be sure to do your research. There are many out there that will charge you hundreds of dollars to do this. To make sure you are hiring a good designer, look for the following:

  • References/Testimonials
  • Check out their Portfolio
  • Ask specific questions like Skill Level, Years of Experience, etc.
  • Solicit your Friends

Just be CAUTIOUS, as I don’t want you to be taken for your hard-earned money.

Lastly, if you use WordPress.com

Your choices are limited to their Free or Premium themes. They lack the total customization that WordPress.org sites do. So, if you are serious about your blogging and thinking you may want to have more freedom and possibly monetize your site, think about Migrating your current blog to a self-hosted WordPress.org site. Your choices are unlimited!

A friend of mine expressed the demand for someone who can handle the Migration of said sites. This is a new Service I’m adding to my business by the New Year. If you think you may want more information on what is involved, please Contact Me to discuss your options. There’s nothing like having the Freedom to do what you want with your very own blog!
