My recent escapade with a previous web host left me frantically seeking out a new best buddy in the web hosting arena. As we all know, there are so many choices out there! If you post up on Twitter or Facebook requesting suggestions, you’re going to get a multitude of answers with affiliate links. Guaranteed to make your head spin! Seeking recommendations is a good idea, however, be wary of those who are simply trying to make an affiliate sale.

After doing some research, I was happy to stumble upon articles like:

Ya see, my troubles came when I decided to downgrade my SiteGround shared web hosting account from Grow Big to Startup. I wasn’t getting 25,000 visits a month. I was lucky if I was getting the maximum for the Startup account, which is 10,000. So, it was a huge surprise when I received notification from SiteGround that my account had exceeded the CPU resource usage!

I had been with SiteGround for a few years and had this happen only one other time, thus I upgraded. However, this time was different. When I downgraded, I lost the Hackerproof security and was actually HACKED! How the hell did that happen?

After speaking with SiteGround, they recommended I upgrade to GrowBig but would not assist me in removing the malicious software and whatnots that infected my site.

Thus, I scraped my entire site!

I’ve never been more disappointed than I was the day my beloved SiteGround let me down. This is a web hosting company that I highly recommend to all my clients!

Not anymore!

I’ve been left with such a distaste in my mouth that I can’t recommend it as my top 2 resources for web hosting. How sad is that?

    Hi Bren,

    Really digging this review.

    Green Geeks looks like a fabulous solution. Definitely good deal too on having live chat support, which is a biggie for me when making such a big decision. When you need to wait around for even the most basic questions it can turn you off big-time, especially with hosting issues. Good for you too, going off the beaten path for hosting. I did the same thing with a UK company. Loving the ride there as they just did a server upgrade and my site is a bit quicker, and it was already pretty tight in that department.

    Hey Bren,

    Long time no talk. Well I hope to get back in the swing of things again. I have learned so much in the the past few months.

    I enjoyed you review of Green Geeks, they are one of my recommended hosts as well. I love that they use wind power to help run their hosting services.

    Bren, I am so sorry to hear about your experience with SiteGround, as they have been one of my favorite hosts as well. But you know sometimes things happen. I still use them for a few sites, and I have not had any problems so far, but as you know, I do a lot of my own problem solving with web hosts that the average user does not do.

    I have also used Liquid Web and WPEngine for a few months on my main sites, and they were good, but not what I expected. I have since went a different route with hosting. I now leverage Google Cloud for hosting, and they seem to blow everyone else away! Obviously though, they are not for everyone, and they require a higher learning curve, but hey I am a technical sort of guy any way, so it was just a new challenge for me.

    Bren, I have really learned that when selecting a host, it just really depends what your needs are. If you can get by with using the shared hosts, such as SiteGround, BlueHost, or Green Geeks, then that is the way to go. Once your needs change, you may find you need something better, and you may not want to have to deal with the web host at all. You may want someone to handle all that for you. That’s what I do for my clients, all they worry about is signing into WorPress and that’s it. Let me know the next time you decide to change hosts and maybe I can hook you up!

      I think you may be the one that originally notified me of GreenGeeks. 🙂 I love the web host reviews you share on your site. I’m amazed to know that you have more than one site, though. How am I missing these?

      You’re right in the fact you are very technical. It’s something I admire in you. You like to dig into the bones, whereas, I prefer to caress or tickle them. haha As you know, with all hosts we are going to have different experiences. Like you said, it depends on what your needs are. Where I do recommend Bluehost, I won’t to someone who has a large site or is a business. I prefer Bluehost for basic bloggers. There are many more powerful resources out there for us business peeps, including Google Cloud like you. Have you written about that yet and I missed it?

        Hey Bren,

        The sites I was referring to our my client sites I have hosted with SiteGround. I haven’t received the same emails as you, but if I do, and it gets to be a problem, I will just move them. Hosting is getting so competitive now, that a lot of these companies are focusing on price point and not on service. I saw one host offering $2 hosting. Everyone is moving around trying to find the best deal. I believe you get what you pay for and for $2, believe me, you don’t get much.

        I try to take all that headache away from my clients so they can focus on their business and not their host. I am not trying to complete with these rock bottom hosts on price. I try to provide a quality product and believe clients are willing to pay more for the peace of mind of not having to deal with their website hosting.

        Ok Nerd alert!!

        No I haven’t written anything on Google Cloud. I have been testing a lot with it lately though and the speed is amazing! Since it is cloud based, there is virtually no down time at all. And it is highly scaleable, and will grow with you. I think eventually everyone’s web site will be on cloud services. It’s been catching on for a couple years now, but is just now starting to get affordable. As I mentioned before, it does have a steep learning curve, so I guess that’s a turn off for most.

    Hi Bren,

    I’ve personally never heard of Go Green, but it looks like it’s a great company. Like you, I’ve just started getting those CPU emails from SiteGround. I even reached my limit one day. Luckily I was able to contact their support and they increased my CPU limitations.

    I am on the GrowBig plan and am not anywhere near the 25,000 monthly visits. So not sure why was getting those emails. After talking to them, they told me that my site was getting hit by a lot of bad bots.

    I ended up downloading a plugin called Blackhole for Bad Bots. Since I started using this plugin about a week ago, I haven’t received any of those emails anymore. My site hasn’t gone down either.

    So fingers crossed that the plugin is indeed blocking those bad bots that were driving up my CPU.

    It is annoying. However, I paid for 3 years in advance for my hosting account, the last thing I want to do is spend more money on migrating to a new site. However, if I keep getting those pesky emails, I may just have to check out the Go Green hosting.

    Your review looks awesome and so glad to hear that you’re happy with their service. It’s definitely hard to find the right hosting account.

      Isn’t it kind of fun learning about new hosts and what they offer? I love it when I stumble upon a post that is showing me “hope”! Rob McDonald writes about the different web hosting companies too. You should check out his blog if you have a chance.

      Sadly, I did find that many people were getting the “exceeding cpu” issues from SiteGround. I don’t understand why it finally caught up with me after all these years? Have they grown so big now that the servers are bombarded or are their metrics just not up to par. Regardless, I can only recommend services that I use and think highly of. Once this happened to me with SiteGround, I am not comfortable recommending them any longer. I hope your service goes well with them. 3 years is a long time to be unhappy. This is one reason why I only like to do an annual, in the event the service begins to fail me.
